Uncle Toad: Going My Way? was completed in 2011 in response to an exhibition invitation by Ann Payne of Morgantown, West Virginia. An environmental activist, Ms. Payne invited 90 artists from Pennsylvania, West Virginia and other nearby regions to mount a visual memorial to the 116 difference species of wildlife that were killed in 2007 by oxygen starvation from an extensive bloom of golden algae. Such virulent growth is encouraged by toxic runoff from farming, mining and natural gas drilling on the lands surrounding Dunkard Creek, a 42 mile long watershed that begins in West Virginia and empties into the Monongahela River up into Pennsylvania. The artists received the names of the species by lottery. I was asked to portray the American Bullfrog and chose to create a political satire whose point is to emphasize the responsibility of all Americans to shoulder responsibility for this country's resources and environment.
